Jamaican Community Leaders Praise Nehemiah UCHA On Recent Visit

Two prominent community leaders from Jamaica visited the UK recently to meet with church leaders, police representatives and church groups to share their experiences of working with inner city communities of Kingston, Jamaica. Their itinerary included a tour of Charles Pearson Court, one of the local retirement housing schemes managed by Midlands Housing Association Nehemiah UCHA.

Pastors Bruce Fletcher and Bobby Wilmot headed up the seven person Jamaican delegation to the UK to participate in forums on issues relevant to African Caribbean communities. During their stay, they were invited on a tour of Charles Pearson Court where they met and talked with tenants, mostly African Caribbean residents aged 60 and over.

The complex consists of 40 flats offering one and two bedroom supported living accommodation which is of particular interest to Afro-Caribbean elders who are well represented amongst the residents and the visitors expressed how impressed they were by the accommodation, the facilities and how the property was managed by Nehemiah UCHA.

One of the delegates, Bishop Errol Blondell Henry, said of the visit:

“It was a real opportunity for us to have toured the impressive facilities and to have lunch with the Nehemiah UCHA team on our visit to the UK. We were also able to see how the association operates with the local community and how they involve their residents in the decision making process for the organisation.  We look forward to a continuing relationship with the organisation in the future.”

It was a sentiment echoed by Nehemiah UCHA Chief Executive Llewellyn Graham:

“The trip was a learning experience for our organisation as it gave us a better insight into issues affecting African Caribbean communities both here and in Jamaica.  We are keen for people to see the work we do and the fact that what we are doing could be replicated in Jamaica is a positive message, and real endorsement that Nehemiah UCHA is doing excellent work in the local communities.”’
